Tips for Creating Effective Agents
Creating compelling and useful AI agents is key to providing value to your customers. Here are some tips focused on the agent creation process within your admin panel:
1. Clear Title:
Give your agent a Title that clearly indicates its function (e.g., "Blog Post Idea Generator," not just "Generator"). Your customers need to understand its purpose at a glance.
2. Helpful Description:
Write a concise Description that explains the benefit or the specific task the agent performs. What problem does it solve?
3. Crafting Effective Instructions (Prompts)
The Instruction field is the most critical part of defining your agent's behavior and ensuring it provides valuable responses to your users. The quality of your prompt directly impacts the quality of the AI's output. Remember, you have a 2000-character limit, so be clear and strategic. Here are key techniques for writing effective prompts:
Be Specific & Clear:
- Avoid vague or ambiguous language. Clearly state the desired task and outcome. The more specific you are, the better the AI can understand and execute.
- β Bad Example:
Write about marketing.
- β
Good Example:
Write a 500-word blog post introduction explaining the benefits of content marketing for small B2B SaaS companies.
Define the Role/Persona:
- Tell the AI who it should act as. This sets the context, tone, and level of expertise for its responses.
- Example:
You are an expert travel agent specializing in budget European travel.
- Example:
You are a friendly and helpful customer support representative for [Your Platform Name].
Provide Necessary Context:
- Give the AI the background information it needs to perform the task accurately. Don't assume it knows details about your specific business, product, or target audience unless you provide them.
- Example:
Generate 3 social media post ideas promoting our new organic coffee blend. The target audience is environmentally conscious millennials aged 25-35. The key selling points are fair trade, unique flavor profile, and compostable packaging.
Specify the Output Format:
- Tell the AI how you want the information presented. This helps ensure the response is structured usefully.
- Example:
List the top 3 advantages as a numbered list.
- Example:
Provide the summary in a single paragraph under 100 words.
- Example:
Format the key action items using bullet points, including the assigned person.
Set the Tone:
- Explicitly define the desired tone of voice for the agent's responses.
- Example:
Respond in a professional and formal tone.
- Example:
Use a friendly, casual, and encouraging tone.
- Example:
Write with empathy and understanding.
Guide Constraints (What NOT to Do):
- Sometimes it's helpful to tell the AI what it should avoid doing.
- Example:
Do not invent statistics or product features.
- Example:
Avoid using technical jargon.
- Example:
Do not provide financial or medical advice.
Iterate Based on Testing (Crucial!):
- Writing the perfect prompt often takes refinement. Always test your agent thoroughly using the "Preview" -> "Open Demo" feature.
- See how it responds to different user inputs. If the results aren't what you expected, go back and edit the Instructions.
- Try rephrasing, adding more specific details, breaking down complex steps, or simplifying your language. Small changes to the prompt can significantly improve the agent's performance.
Model Choice:
- Selecting the right AI Model significantly impacts your agent's performance, reasoning ability, response style, and adherence to instructions. Consider the complexity and nature of the task your agent will perform when choosing:
- ChatGPT-4o: (OpenAI) OpenAI's most advanced model. Excellent for complex reasoning, creative tasks, and nuanced understanding. Choose for top-tier performance.
- Claude (3.5 Sonnet): (Anthropic) Anthropic's high-performing model. Strong at complex instructions, creative writing, and analysis. A powerful alternative to GPT-4o.
- ChatGPT o1-preview: (OpenAI) A preview version, potentially offering newer reasoning capabilities. Good for experimenting with cutting-edge features.
- Gemini (Pro): (Google) Google's capable and versatile model. A solid all-rounder for general tasks, conversation, and potentially accessing up-to-date information.
- ChatGPT o1-mini: (OpenAI) Likely an optimized, faster version. Suitable for simpler tasks, quick Q&A, or where response speed is priority.
- ChatGPT-3.5 Turbo: (OpenAI) Widely-used, fast, and efficient. Great balance for many standard tasks like drafting text and answering questions.
Note: Experiment to see which model works best with your instructions!
Sharing Status:
Use "Only Me" while developing and testing. Switch to "Exclusive Agents" and select the target customer organizations when ready.
Visuals (Image):
Choose a relevant Image (icon or uploaded) that visually represents the agent's function.
Iterate and Test:
Creating a great agent often requires refinement. Test thoroughly using the "Preview" -> "Open Demo" environment and adjust the Instructions based on the results.
